**Update: As of March 2018, WOW Air has ceased operations. A new budget Icelandic airline, PLAY, will be taking its place by a former WOW Executive. Keep up to date here!**
You’ve probably seen the brightly painted purple WOW Airplanes before. It’s a no-frills, low-cost carrier founded in 2011 that connects North America to Europe via Iceland. They frequently have flights for $99 to Iceland, and I’ve even seen $49 one way! Their low rates don’t include taxes and service fees, seat selection, bags (besides a personal item), drinks, food, or really anything but a seat on the plane.
We booked our trip in October, but got an email in January saying our flight was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” and they wanted to rebook us for another date. We only had to push it back a day, but we had already booked our flight to Los Angeles, so this caused us to have to stay the night in LA. It was frustrating having to deal with customer service to rebook because there was no phone number, so everything was done via email. We finally got rebooked in February and traveled May 17-24th, 2017.
After all of the added fees, you’ll still likely end up getting a fantastic deal on a flight to Iceland. Buy your bag and any amenities when booking to save money. Since we had to deal with the flight cancellation and to change our trip around, I’m 50/50 on if I’d recommend it or not. If it’s much cheaper than all other options, I’d say do it.
Recently, they cut some of their routes, including Los Angeles, which we flew to Iceland.
